Neighbours have praised the emergency services for their quick response to a fire that damaged a house for sale in Bradford on Avon yesterday.

They said fire crews arrived at the property in Downs View off the Winsley Road within “ten minutes” of receiving the urgent 999 call.

A young couple, who did not wish to be named, said: “We phoned for the fire service but they had already been alerted by the householders.

“The fire services were there within ten minutes and everybody was asked to leave their homes.

“We were not able to stay in our property and were able to stay with neighbours until the incident was over.

“The fire service was absolutely amazing. They were so quick and efficient and their communication was brilliant.”

Other neighbours declined to talk about the incident, which involved a family living in a semi-detached house which is up for sale.

It is understood that one person was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation after the fire in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Emergency services were called to the blaze in Downs View just before 12.30am after a fire started in a first floor front bedroom.

A Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: “We were called to a semi-detached property in Downs View, Bradford on Avon at 12.28am this morning for a fire in a first floor bedroom.

“Four crews attended, from Bradford on Avon, Trowbridge, Melksham and Westbury, together with the aerial ladder platform and a supporting pump from Bath.

“Six breathing apparatus wearers used two hose reel jets and a main jet, and the stop was at 2.38am.”

It is understood the fire started accidentally but the exact cause is not yet known.

The spokeswoman added: “One person was treated for smoke inhalation but I don’t know if they needed to go to hospital.”

The three-bedroomed property is up for sale for £375,000 with the local Kingstons estate agents.

But its roof and a small front bedroom will now need to be repaired and redecorated before a sale can proceed.
